Is this really pop music?

On Saturday the Norwegian version of the Grammys takes place in my hometowns neighboring city of Stavanger.

21 categories and subsequently 21 winners. There are also three special prices.

One of the nominees is the international acclaimed lo-fi-post rock band "The Low Frequency In Stereo" from my hometown of Haugesund. Brilliant musicians nominated for their fifth studio album "Pop Obskura".

All good. There is only one thing that is distorted.

The album has been nominated in the category of "BEST POP GROUP".

I know it is sometimes difficult to place music in genre, but in this particular case it shouldn't be so difficult.

It's not pop music, so we have to find them a new category, I would have said if I was in the board of Spellemann AS. But I'm not.

The thing is that in the rules of Spellemann it is clearly stated that the bands/artists themselves sign in their contribution and that they are responsible of categorizing their own contribution.

So, what happened here?

Are the members of "The Low Frequency in Stereo" now musically comparing themselves to the likes of Daft Punk, Pink, Rihanna and Robin Thicke and friends, or have the board of Spellemann shuffeled with the entrants?

They can do that if there is not enough entries in the category the band signed in for.

Of course I will be proud if they win in the "Pop group" category on Saturday. But, I think I would have been prouder if they won in categories like "Indie", "Rock" or even in "Open" (for those who doesn't fit in elsewhere).

Perhaps this is more a kick to the young musicians in Norway. Made we need to start making more pop music here?

Anyway.

On Friday, The Low Frequency in Stereo release their "Cybernautic EP" exclusively on Spotify. Today the music video premiered exclusively on diffuser.fm.

Judge for yourself. According to Spellemann this is Norwegian pop music of 2013.

For me it's just a piece of great and groovy music thats sounds extremely good coming out of my stereo:

I will also share my favourite TLFIS song, even though there is no video made for it:
